The origin of this one-day festival began in the late 1970s when Joel Cohen, an American working for French national radio, envisioned a “world music day” that celebrated the diversity of all music. The first festival took place in Paris in 1982 on the Summer Solstice, June 21st.
Now in its 30th year around the world, the Alliance Française in Santa Rosa will mark this anniversary with a concert of French music performed by Due Zighi Baci, a dynamic duo consisting of tenor and accordion. Their concert program celebrates the diversity and varied expression of French chanson. Drawing on some of the best examples from a wide variety of composers, their authentic renderings will span from the early 1910s through the 1970s. Some of the featured composers include Charles Aznavour , Jacque Brel, Charles Trenet , Serge Gainsbourg , Arstide Bruant, Vincent Scotto, Marguerite Monnot, Norbert Glanzberg, Gilbert Bécaud, and Francis Lai, among others.
Much of the music has either debuted on a Parisian street, in a cabaret, café, dance hall or concert hall. Each song conveys the beauty, mystery, and alluring charm in its melody and harmonies; in addition, each selection of the multimedia concert will be accompanied by a video presentation to complement the songs.
