Paris through the Ages – History Class

The City of Light – the most historic, the most influential, the most international of cities. If one urban center deserves to be called ‘The Capital of the World’, it would have to be Paris. Each class will highlight one of the formative stages of this wondrous city. Great preparation for travel to Paris.

Session Topics:

1. Paris Medieval – Site of the first Universities and Gothic Cathedrals in Europe

2. Age of Absolutism – Louis XIV – the Sun-King, and his grand Palace at Versailles

3. The Enlightenment – How the Philosophes’ new thought led to the French Revolution

4. Age of Empire – One Napoleon conquers Europe; the other Napoleon redesigns Paris

5. Belle Époque – When the Impressionists made Paris the center of the artistic world

Midnight in Paris – The City of Light between the Wars – The Moveable Feast Americans in Paris: Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Josephine Baker & Cole Porter

Instructor:  Bruce Elliott, Ph.D Berkeley. Class sessions will have a multi-media character, utilizing period artwork and music to help bring the fascinating story of this great city to life.
